The Method

Great Training Begins With a Great Relationship.

By the time most people call me, they've already tried training. Their dog knows sit, stay, and come. But they still pull on walks, bark at the door, jump on guests, or ignore commands when life gets distracting.

The problem usually isn't that your dog doesn't know the command. It's that they haven't yet learned to consistently look to you for guidance when life becomes exciting, stressful, or overwhelming.

That's where The Relationship First Method is different.

I don't just teach dogs what to do. I teach people how to build trust, communicate clearly, understand what their dog is telling them, and become the calm, confident person their dog can trust and rely on.

When those pieces come together, obedience becomes more reliable—not because your dog has practiced the command more, but because they trust you, understand you, and naturally look to you for guidance.

You'll still learn essential skills like loose-leash walking, coming when called, polite greetings, and everyday manners. But instead of simply teaching your dog what to do, I'll help you understand why it works, so you can confidently apply what you've learned long after our training sessions are over.

Because lasting behavior is built on lasting relationships.

Confidence Begins With Trust

Trust gives your dog the confidence to look to you when they're unsure. When your dog trusts your guidance, they become calmer, more confident, and more willing to work with you. Trust becomes the foundation for every behavior that follows.

Better Communication Creates Better Behavior

Your dog is always communicating with you. Once you learn to recognize what they're saying and respond in a way they understand, everything becomes clearer. Better communication creates less confusion, greater confidence, and a stronger partnership.

Training for Everyday Life

Training should work where you actually live: on walks, when guests arrive, at the veterinarian, at the park, and throughout your everyday routines. You'll leave with practical skills you can confidently use every day.

Training Designed Around Your Dog—and You.

Every dog is different. Every family is different. That's why every training program is designed around your goals, your lifestyle, and the relationship you want to build with your dog.

Not sure where to begin? Let's talk. Together, we'll find the program that's the right fit for you and your dog.

Meet Your Coach

Susan Hawk

I've spent more than a decade working with dogs of every age, breed, and background — from puppies learning their first skills to rescues rebuilding trust. I became a trainer because I saw how much better life is for dogs and their people when they truly understand one another.

I work with a small number of families at a time, so every dog gets the focused attention and steady guidance they deserve. My job is to give you a clear plan, practical tools, and the confidence to follow through.

View all questions
How long does training take?
Most programs run six to twelve weeks of active coaching, but the relationship you build keeps growing after that. During your consultation, we'll design a timeline that fits your life and your dog's pace.
Do you use treats or corrections?
We use positive reinforcement and clear, calm communication. We never use shock, prong collars, or intimidation. Our approach is based on modern behavioral science and respect for your dog.
Can you help with reactive dogs?
Yes. Reactivity, anxiety, and fear are a core focus. We work at your dog's pace to change how they feel, not just what they do.
